Hannah
House - About the Film
Holding
true to the intentionally B movie horror style of
Monkey Angel Studios short films, Hannah House is an explo-ration
into the twisted realms of the uncomfortable and exhibits the
limitless creative possibilities of independent digital filmmaking.
While most digital films today are either genre heavy (techno, rave
music influ-enced)
or primarily character driven with low production value, Hannah House
tweaks the genre and utilizes digital effects to capture life on the
cruel prairie.
Wanting to make something visually spectacular heavy on special
effects - but
with an art film mystique, the studio took inspiration from the silent
film era.
Edited solely on Macintosh computers, the movie was filmed partly on
location in
Dalton, Nebraska and Grand Junction, Colorado and was also shot largely
on
blue screen in the studio. Shooting on blue screen allowed the studio
to create
visual textures similar to those that occur now in many of the decomposing
silent
films from the 20s. The effects are aptly placed to serve as mood
and tension in
the story and add a serendipitous quality of physical decay to the film.
By seem-ingly
naturally capturing the imperfections of scratches, skips, dirt and
trapped
hairs the result is like watching a painting of the desolate prairie
come alive.
While the filters and editing characteristics of the film are widely
available in the
digital world today, rarely have studios used the technology as a narrative
element
rather than just as a visual aesthetic. With nowhere to look in the
industry for
ideas, many of the processes and procedures used on the making of Hannah
House had to be developed along the way.
As artists and supporters of art, the films creators felt that
supporting Denver arti-sans
on the project itself was key in ensuring a successful process and end
result.
The production crew features all Denver actors, musicians and fashion
designers.
